Association of British Theatre Technicians Theatre Show - June 2026

We navigated a tube strike and climbed a hill in the rain… but it was worth it!

Every year, ABTT brings together theatre makers who make sure that tech, compliance, logistics and safety seamlessly support hundreds of productions and tours. We ventured down to North London’s Ally Pally to attend the theatre show. What a fabulous venue and, of course, the views are tremendous.

The trade show was quite large, reminding us of the vastness of the industry that bolsters the performing arts; the ecosystem is varied and dynamic! It was fascinating to learn about the contributions of companies that supply everything from seating, lighting and drapery to wig-making, joinery, sound and rigging. Besides suppliers, there was also an Education Alley and Careers Hub, where colleges and conservatoires engaged with young adults interested in technical and academic paths in theatre. An Associations Area assembled trade union and professional bodies related to the sector. It was great to catch up with some of our customers, friends and colleagues, such as The Stage and TheatreCraft.

Flanking the trade show and dotting the day’s schedule were casual yet interesting coffee chats with industry leaders, discussing topics ranging from automation and AI to trends in costumery and skillset training. More in-depth sessions included expert panels covering subjects like sound mixing and apprentice networks. We were, of course, particularly drawn to seminars about sustainability. Thank you to the Royal Ballet and Opera and Theatre Green Book for spreading the word about the Sustainable Suppliers Database initiative, which enables the pooling of information and resources sharing so that theatres can make buying decisions that chime with their green ambitions. As a Carbon Balanced Printer, we are well positioned to play a role in an orchestrated environmental progression of the theatre industry.

This was a rewarding day, superbly organised by the brilliant Association of British Theatre Technicians team!
